Celebrate Joy during the Holidays, Alleviate Stress!

Celebrate Joy during the Holidays, Alleviate Stress!

It is sad but true that so often the holiday season is one of the least joy filled times of year, especially for Moms.  Here are a few tips (by no means an exhaustive list) to help keep your holidays as joyful as your everyday.

PLAN IT OUT-make a holiday bucket list and be realistic!  Then get out your calendar and make a plan.  Especially at the holidays I put everything on my calendar.  I write down when I am addressing cards, when I am taking a pic for the cards, when we are decorating our tree, school events, etc. Once the holiday To-Dos are accounted for look at the bucket list and pick days for the fun stuff!

When you write everything down you can be sure that you are leaving room. That is my second tip. LEAVE MARGIN! I used to plan out every day to the minute, no surprise if you know me. It was exhausting and ineffective because the important things were given no greater priority than the unimportant. Further, there was no space for God. No space for Him to move and no space for Him to move me.  Now my days have empty space in them. It’s a beautiful thing. There is room for a last minute lunch date, there is room to stop and look at the construction site with Finn, there is room for a crisis (which tends to happen in our family) there is room to pray, there is room to NOT FEEL PRESSED.

Last tip is SET PRIORITIES.  I love to entertain.  I love a full table.  But at the holiday time I need to ask myself what is more important a table full of friends or a table full of homemade food?   Sometimes take out is better  and (I am speaking to myself her) offer yourself grace about that.  I am learning, slowly, to let others help. Because I would rather have more people and less tasks for my hostess duties.  If you know whats important you can easily see whats not and adjust accordingly

Friends, family and especially your children will remember the experiences and traditions you celebrate joyfully throughout their life but will probably only remember a handful of presents they have ever received.  Invest wisely, especially this wonderful time of the year. Celebrating Joyfully during the holidays will look different for most of us. It may be volunteering, an advent study, decorating, caroling, two of our favorites are a charlie brown tree the kids decorate with handmade nativity  ornaments  each advent in our kitchen and a family sleepover under the Christmas tree the first night it is decorated. The options are endless-don’t get overwhelmed by that.

Make a plan, leave margin and keep the priorities straight.

There is so much joy to be had simply resting in the true gift of the season.
